Know your coffee
Espresso is a concentrated coffee drink that is prepared by forcing pressurized hot liquid (water) into finely grounded coffee beans. The brewing time for espresso coffee is much shorter, made possible by espresso machines that generate up to 15 atmospheres (ATM) of pressure to force the water through the coffee.
Espresso coffee is a blend of several different types of coffee beans from different countries. The beans are roasted until they are dark and oily-looking.
This is a very fine ground coffee that is packed into a port filter and inserted into an espresso machine. Water that is heated to 190-197 degrees Fahrenheit is forced under 8-10 atmospheres of pressure through the port filter of fine coffee to produce. Espresso is the base for Cappuccino and Latte.
Café latte is prepared by adding Espresso, a lot of milk and small dollop of milk foam (or froth).A latte is very popular in North America. In Europe a latte would tend to be considered something you would serve to your children. When made properly I consider a latte to be a delicious drink. Many people confuse the latte with the cappuccino. A latte is espresso in combination with steamed milk. To give you an idea of ingredient ratios, a 16oz. drink would be 2-3oz. of espresso and the rest steamed milk.
Cappuccino is prepared by adding Espresso coffee, milk and lot of froth (milk Foam.)
This drink is often confused with a Latte, but in essence they are different drinks. The common cappuccino is made in 1/3 proportions. This means a proper cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 “steamed” milk, and 1/3 “frothed” milk. The espresso and steamed milk are poured together and the frothed milk is scooped on top. This drink is very subjective in my opinion, and can be ordered several different ways.
Cafe Au Lait –A latte is coffee, with milk (“latte” is “milk” in Italian). It’s called “cafe au lait” in French (again, coffee-with-milk). This one is easy and straight forward. 50% Dark Coffee: 50% Steamed Milk.
Mocha: An espresso drink that consists of espresso, steamed milk, foam, and chocolate syrup. In mocha the chocolate syrup in stirred with the espresso to create a caffeinated hot chocolate with foam. Cappuccino is supposed to be serving in a porcelain cup whereas Mocha will be served in a glass.
