Traditionally the Mathrees are deep fried in oil, but I made this by baking, a real lifesaver snack with healthy option.


21/2cups all-purpose flour

1 cup semolina

1/2 cup oil

1tsp.Carom seeds

1/2 tsp. coarsely crushed black pepper

Salt to taste

Water for kneading


Sieve flour and salt; mix with semolina, carom seeds and oil, like breadcrumb’s texture.

Add warm water gradually to knead into dough.  The dough shouldn’t be too soft or too hard either. Cover and Keep aside to rest the dough for 20 minutes.

Divide the dough into small balls and roll out all the balls into small circles of 2 inch diameter and about 1/4 inch thickness Use any shape of cookie cutter, for giving the shape. Prick each circle a couple of times with a fork to ensure that it doesn’t puff up while baking.

Preheat oven at 180 degree centigrade and bake all the Mathrees 20 minutes.

Cool completely before storing in an air-tight container. Serve anytime with lime pickle.
